A taxonomy is a hierarchical/nested structure that helps organize content. A simple example of taxonomy is organizing files into folders in Windows Explorer.
Taxonomy is one of the properties of an asset, so you can work with it in the same way as with any other property.
Creating and editing a taxonomy tree
To create a taxonomy tree:
1. Go to the Home > Content > Props section in the administrative panel,
2. In the upper right corner, click Add Prop,
3. Fill in the fields as for a regular property. For information on how to do this, see the article Creating, Editing, and Deleting Properties for Assets and Collections. Pay special attention to the following fields:
Title. The name of the taxonomy tree. This field is required to be filled in.
Slug. The purpose of this field is to make sure that the property name is unique. Leave it blank, it will be filled in automatically.
Is multi lang. This is to specify if the property is a multi-language one. You do not need to check the box because the taxonomy cannot be multilingual.
Data type. This field is required. It specifies the type of the property value. To create a taxonomy tree, select Tree.
Two more settings are available for the Tree data type:
Show on left panel. When you select the checkbox in the checkbox, the corresponding taxonomy will be displayed in the left panel under the Taxonomy tab in the interface of your workspace.
Multi-select available. If you select the checkbox in the checkbox, one asset can be linked to several taxa. If the check box is not selected, one asset can be linked to only one taxon and when you try to link an asset to another taxon, the first link will be broken.
4. After filling in the fields, click the Save button.
To edit the taxonomy tree:
1. Select a taxonomy (a Tree type property) in Home > Content > Props section of the administrative panel.
2. Make the necessary changes.
3. Click on the Save button to save the changes.
Activating the taxonomy display in the user interface
Creating a property does not lead to it being displayed automatically in the user interface. For the latter, add the property to one of the content types of assets or collections.
1. To do this, go to Content types.
2. Select content type Asset and go to its dialog box.
3. In the Props field, find the created property in the list and click on it, while holding down the Control key (Command on a Mac). Attention! Clicking on the property without holding down the Control key will lead to the deletion of the previously selected properties.
4. Click the Save button.
Thus, you can create several taxonomies and link assets to different taxonomies.
Creating taxons
To create a new taxon (section) inside the tree:
1. Go to the Home > Content > Tree items section in the administrative panel,
2. Click the Add Taxon button in the top right corner.
3. Fill in the fields:
In the Prop field, select the taxonomy tree where the taxon will be located in.
In the Parent field, select the parent taxon. If the new taxon is top-level, leave the Parent field empty.
In the Name field, enter the name of the taxon.
The Slug field is the technical code that is usually filled in automatically after saving the changes. If not, enter the taxon name in the Slug field in Latin letters, without spaces, separating the words with an underscore _.
4. Click the Save button.
Note that it is not recommended to create more than three hierarchy levels as it makes it difficult to find and work with the content.
You can specify the order of the created taxa in the tree. If you want to reposition a taxon, move the mouse cursor over the icon and drag the taxon to the right position with the left mouse button.
By clicking on the icon you will see the next level taxa associated with the selected parental taxon.
Deleting taxon
In order to delete a taxon:
1. Go to the Home > Content > Tree items section in the administrative panel,
2. Find the taxon you want to delete.
3. Click the square to the left of the taxon name and check the box.
4. Above the taxonomy tree in the Action panel, select Delete selected Tree items.
5. Click Go and confirm the deletion.
6. Refresh the Picvario interface page to see the changes.
Taxonomy Settings
In the Options section of the administrative panel, you will find 2 properties related to the taxonomy.
— taxonomy_enabled allows you to control the visibility of the taxonomy panel in the Picvario interface.
Check the Val box so that the taxonomy panel is available in the Picvario interface for authorized users.
— taxonomy_unauthorized_enabled allows you to show the taxonomy panel to unauthorized users or hide it from them.
In order to make the taxonomy tree visible to unauthorized users:
1. Go to the Home > Permissions > Public props section in the administrative panel,
2. In the top right corner, click Add public prop,
3. In the Prop field, select the taxonomy (a property of the tree type).
4. Click Save.
You can make some taxonomies visible to external users, and hide some from them and leave them visible only to authorized users.
Taxonomy as a property
Taxonomy is a property of an asset, which gives a number of advantages when working with it:
Multiple taxonomies
You can create multiple taxonomies and choose which ones to show in the left panel. Following the steps described in Creating and Editing a taxonomy tree, you can create multiple taxonomies. The Show on left panel field allows you to enable or disable the display of the taxonomy on the left panel in the Picvario interface.
Taxonomy in the preview panel
The taxonomy can be displayed on the preview panel.
To do this:
1. Go to the Home > Content > Prewiew props section in the administrative panel,
2. Click Add preview prop in the top right corner.
3. Select the required property in the Prop field. Note that if you tick Is title box, the property will be placed at the top of the list of properties instead of the Title property. Tick the Show label box if you wish the name of the metadata property to be displayed in the preview mode. If not activated, only the value of the property will be visible.
4. Click Save.
5. Go to Home > Content > Preview prop sets. In the Preview props field, hold down the Ctrl/Command key and select the required properties. Click Save.
Taxonomy in the import panel and in the import link
The taxonomy can be displayed on the import panel and in the import links.
1. Go to the Home > Content > Props section in the administrative panel,
2. Select a taxonomy (a property with the Tree type),
3. Select the checkbox in the Requested value checkbox so that the property is displayed in the asset import dialog. The value of this property can be filled in for all imported assets right during the import process.
You can make this property mandatory when importing. To do this, select the Required for import checkbox.
4. Click Save.
The properties that are displayed on the import panel will also be displayed when creating an import link.
Taxonomy in the filter panel
You can add a taxonomy to the filter panel and make multiple selections.
For information on how to add a property to the filtering panel, see the article How to configure the asset/collection filter panel.
If a taxonomy has been added to the filter panel, click on the field to select one or more taxa. The selected sections are ticked, and you cannot select both the parent and child taxon at the same time. Click Apply to add a search filter. The selected taxa will be displayed in the level 1 taxon / level 2 taxon/ level 3 taxon format. Several selected taxa will be separated by commas.
